Amina

Amina can refer to either of two artists: (Aparently you might listen either under this name???)

1) The Icelandic quartet Amiina, formerly Amína, known for their multi-instrumantalism and their work with Sigur Rós.

2) The Tunisian singer Amina Annabi, known for her East-meets-West world music and for her appearance in the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest.

For more information on the Icelandic quartet, please see Amiina.

Amina Annabi was born in Tunisia, but moved to France in 1975 when she was 12. Her musical career began in the 1980's, as a rapper. She eventually recorded singles with early hip-hop superstars Afrika Bambaata and Grandmaster Flash.

She recorded her debut album, Yalil, in 1990. The album featured the sexy single "Belly Dance," which some commercial success. In 1991, she was declared the joint winner of the Eurovision Song Contest for the song "Le Dernier Qui A Parle," though she was eventually declared the runner-up. Still, this exposure propelled her to stardom in the burgeoning world music fusion market.

Her second album, Wa Di Ye New 93 (Love is Unique), was released in 1992. It was not until 1999 that her third album Annabi hit the shelves. Amina has an acting career along with her singing career, having appeared in a number of movies.

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
