Catherine MacLellan

Catherine MacLellan is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter, currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Before going solo, she was a member of The New Drifts from 2000 until 2003. Her solo albums include Dark Dream Midnight (2004), Church Bell Blues (2006), Water in the Ground (2009), Silhouette (2011).

MacLellan wasborn and raised in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, the daughter of award-winning Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan. With her expressive guitar playing, beautiful melodies, and evocative vocals, MacLellan pulls the listener into her world of song. Described as having a "quietly magnetic" stage presence, Catherine's voice stretches out and hovers in a room with a projection that is deceptively low-key, but ends up fisted in the hearts of her audience.

MacLellan was born in southern Ontario, but from a young age has lived on Prince Edward Island. Coming from a musical family (famed singer/songwriter Gene MacLellan was her father) there was never any doubt in Catherine's mind about her life's work. She began her musical journey early, and now at twenty-five, her strength as a songwriter, confidence on guitar, and unique voice and style set her apart.

From 2000 until 2003, MacLellan was a member of The New Drifts, contributing to their CD release, Nemesis. These days she performs as a solo artist and as a duo with long-time musical collaborator James Phillips. Catherine is also part of the popular old-time-country group, Saddle River. Touring her new album across the maritime region and through Quebec and Ontario has broadened her fan base.

Dark Dream Midnight (2004) won Catherine Best Folk Album and Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2005 PEI Music Awards.

Dark Dream Midnight was nominated for a 2006 ECMA as Folk Album of the Year. Her second album, Church Bell Blues, was released in 2006. Subsequent albums include Water in the Ground (2009), Silhouette (2011).

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
