Dino Canterburg werd geboren in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Damaru groeide op in de volkswijk Latour in een gezin met zes kinderen. Damaru begon op 13 jarige leeftijd met rappen, waarna hij het ook als zanger probeerde. Zijn zangtalenten bleken een groot succes toen hij zich bij de formatie 'Lava Boys' voegde. Enkele tijd later en na wat meer oefenen voegde hij zich bij de 'New Jack Boys', waar hij opnieuw voor succes zorgde. Damaru dankt zijn naam aan zijn grote idool Tupac, wiens tweede naam Amaru was. De D van Dino ervoor en zo is zijn artiestennaam ontstaan.
Momenteel is de Surinaamse zanger Damaru hot in zijn geboorteland. Hij staat daar al weken op 1 met zijn romantische song 'Mi Rowsu' (mijn roos). Damaru heeft een dochter Denoura (zijn rowsu).
