Kubus, Rico

Kubus (real name Bart van der Werken), is an 'underground' electro-hiphop-producer from the Netherlands. Kubus has got his roots in electro, techno and drum & bass. He is assigned to the biggest Dutch hiphop-label called TopNotch. He became wellknown for his collaborations with DuvelDuvel, Opgezwolle, Typhoon and Jawat!. His first breaktrough came with the track Doe Je Wat Je Doet for Opgezwolle. For this track he worked together with rapper Sticks from Opgezwolle and they eventually recorded an album together. This album is entitled Microphone Colossus and came out in 2004. In the same year he collaborated with DuvelDuvel on the record Aap-O-Theek and created the beats for two tracks: Wie Is Ut? and Lelijk. Wie Is Ut? turned out to be a massive succes in the dutch hiphop-scene. A year later TopNotch released Kubus' first solo album called Buiten Westen. On this record he has some guest rappers like DuvelDuvel, Typhoon, Jawat!, Rico and Sticks. It's a first, that a hiphop producer drops a solo album in the Netherlands. The album features many guest artists but also contains a few instrumental songs.
More recently, Kubus joined an event called DeHop in Escape, Amsterdam. On this single night a graphic designer, an American rapper and a Dutch producer were invited to collaborate and create a special product in front of a live audience. The designer provided the artwork, the producer provided the beats and the rapper provided the lyrics. The result was a track with Ghostface Killah, Trife Da God and Shawn Wigs, called Astro.
At the moment Kubus is working on a follow-up for Buiten Westen and is producing an album called Learning Curve. Learning Curve features the British MC BangBang. For more recent info and music check www.kubus-biets.nl and www.myspace.com/kubusbeats.

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
