Lesley Roy is a pop singer from Balbriggan in Dublin, Ireland. She is signed with Religion Music and is licensed with Jive Records. Her looks have been described as a cross between Avril Lavigne and Melissa Etheridge. And her sound has been described as an 'Irish version' of Kelly Clarkson.
Recording career
Roy's mother is a singer, and she was exposed to the music industry from her youth on. Roy started playing guitar as a seven year old and writing her own songs soon followed. She recorded demos with local producer and musician Rory O'Connor when she was 15, which led to a deal with Glenn Herlihy's independent Religion Music label. Jive Records A&R Jeff Fenster noticed her work, and the two labels agreed to jointly finance Roy's first album project. Lesley Roy is scheduled to be the opener for American Idol runner-up and hit recording artist David Archuleta as he begins his spring tour. The tour will begin February 24 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Albums
The debut album, titled Unbeautiful was released on September 30, 2008. It peaked on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart at #5. She described the meaning of the album's name, "'Unbeautiful' is the title of one of my favorite songs on the album. I called the album that because it’s when I hit rock bottom. It’s the question a lot of people ask when they’re in a relationship, and it’s like ‘where was the point where you didn’t find me attractive anymore?’ It’s a universal feeling and an unusual word. A lot of people ask me about it and relate to it. And the world is not perfect right now. Unbeautiful seems like a realistic title for a lot of things that are happening." The song "Slow Goodbye" was written by Katy Perry.
Singles
She sang vocals on the Bowling for Soup song "Much More Beautiful Person" on their album The Great Burrito Extortion Case. Her single "There’ll Be Angels" is featured in the Warner Bros. film Last Hour. It was released as a single in early 2008.
Her song "I'm Gone, I'm Going" received airplay in the United States. It was the 48th most played song on Hot AC radio stations for the week ending June 24, 2008, and peaked at #61 on Billboard's Pop 100 Airplay chart. It was featured on an episode of The Hills. She appeared on FNMTV on July 18, 2008. She talked about the meaning of the song "It’s definitely about where I am in my life. For the past two years, I was going back and forth to the States, and I finally made the move, and I’m releasing the album, and it’s all coming together now. So "I’m Gone, I’m Going" is 100 percent what I’m doing right now." In the video for her single "I’m Gone, I’m Going" she is driving along the coast but she has stated before that she can't drive. Her single "I'm Gone, I'm Going" is featured as a downloadable track in Rock Band 2. "I'm Gone, I'm Going" is also the theme tune for MTV's show Exiled.
Her second single was "Unbeautiful", the title track from the album. It peaked on Billboard's Pop 100 Airplay chart at #39, but had a second run on the charts in early 2009.[4]
