Papa Brittle

Home is where the hatred is. Papa Brittle is a UK based foursome at the forefront of hard driven, hard hitting music that they have tagged Polemic Beat Poetry. They are also the purveyors of one of the most captivating and scathing live shows currently on offer. After a year of touring and recording, they are back with a nasty wonderful jagged slab of a single, Economic Warzone, lifted from the forthcoming and appropriately titled album Polemic Beat Poetry. This new material is harder, yet far more varied than anything the band has produced to date, veering from the sinister track Stresskiller On The Loose to the funking groove of I Am Mulatto.

The current line-up has been in existence since the band released their first ever vinyl, the conscience bending Obey, Consume Marry and Reproduce mini album on Chumbawumba's Agit-Prop label in 1992. The band line-up is: Lloyd Sparks, lyricist and ranter/occasional singer; Simon Goodwin and Ian Davenport, both responsible for PB's trademark crazy loud guitars and seismic bottom end; fourth member Martin Steib is the outfit's beat purveyor and conspires with Ian in committing audio larceny (the current musical crime of sampling).

Obey... marked the band out amongst all lovers of a substantial, techno-edged metallic drive with its tarmac-levelling rhythms, disturbing samples and overt sense of frustration at the state of the world. The album's release, the subsequent lifting of the unsung classic track Status Quo as a single from it, and intense touring with the likes of Chumbawumba, the Levellers and Pitchshifter got the Papas noticed.

However, the premature demise of Agit-Prop produced somewhat of a hiatus in the band's career. At the end of 1993, Nettwerk dragged the band kicking and screaming out of their tour van and ushered them into the studio to convert 'Obey... ' into a full length album. Nettwerk duly released the new, improved set of songs and a year's further touring of the U.K. and the rest of Europe.

In 1996 the band disbanded after 2 albums and a handful of singles, Lloyd went on to join Fun-Da-Mental, Ian formed AwayTeam and sound engineer on such projects for Badly Drawn Boy, Supergrass and The Leaves, Martin remixed a couple of Singles for Honeycrack and Smalltown Heroes, played drums for Bennet before becoming a Tour Manager and Simon focussed on raising a family.

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
