Solo is the Dutch songwriter Michiel Flamman in co-operation with among others Simon Gitsels. Flamman, debuted as J Perkin with the self-produced record Exhibit a few years back and has been performing at Dutch festivals and clubs since. In the meantime he's become something of a critics favorite and gained an ever growing fan base.
In 2004 Flamman joined up with his piano playing friend Gitsels to record the album Songs 'n Sounds in as little as two weeks time. In the Netherlands it was released by Excelsior Recordings.
The press hailed it as a sublime album:
Ten unbelievable tender popsongs,
(de Volkskrant, biggest newspaper in Holland)
with a quality to be jealous of.
(NRC, evening newspaper)
Fans of Tom McRae and Coldplay can praise themselves very happy with SOLO. (OOR, leading musicmagazine)
Solo was awarded with an Essent Award and performed at Noorderslag festival 2005, which was broadcasted by German Television in Rock-Palast.
In January 2005 Solo started the Songs 'n sounds Tour. A Silent Concerts tour together with the Silent Disco. A tour with up to 500 headphones available for the audience. After that they went on a 26-date theater-tour with Dutch top-act Spinvis.
In January 2006 Solopeople is released. A more band-orientated album, with intriguing artwork. The pop sensibility is upfront and some of the songs seem to be created for the sole purpose of being played over and over again on the radio.
February/March 2006 touring The Netherlands on 25 dates and scoring a number 19 hit with Come back to me.
March 2007 sees Solo return to theaters again as support for Spinvis. Solo-Selection an acoustic-live-album is released at the start of this tour.
In 2007 Solo works on new material and played at Touring Theater Festival De Parade. With befriended musicians they play songs written by Dutch composer Harry Bannink for the seventies television show Stratemakeropzeeshow. In October Solo head for the studio. The recordings are only finished in April 2008 after working with Scott Solter and Aaron Prellwitz at Tiny Telephone studios in San Francisco, CA.
When the record is released in November, Solo is down to one man; Michiel Flamman. The albumtitle refers to the break up of the band. Flamman states in interviews that though Gitsels left the band Solo will continue and a new record is due to be released in April 2009. Meanwhile the album is hailed as another piece of perfect songwriting.
