The Urgency

The Urgency was formed in the winter of 2005, but its roots go back much deeper than that. Founding members Ian Molla and Kevin Coffrin grew up in Vermont and have been writing and playing together in various bands spanning as far back as 1997. Both were accepted into the prestigious jazz program at Ithaca college in 2001 to better their understanding of music and their instruments. Here is where the duo met fellow jazz performance major Guerin Blask , and each member honed and built upon their jazz and classical theory knowledge. Outside of classes, the group packed local venues playing rock music as the band Fuller, and later on Triloquist. Over the years, vocalists came and went, including Ian’s own stint as lead singer.

Upon graduating, the threesome moved out to Brooklyn, New York to pursue a career in rock music. The trio, though highly talented, lacked an essential element they felt was key to the success of their music. That element was found in the vocal stylings of Tyler Gurwicz . Only eighteen years old, Tyler was enrolled as a musical theatre major at nearby Wagner College on Staten Island when he was discovered by the group. Tyler, a fellow Vermonter, had been singing in bands throughout high school, most notably in The Graves and later on, Virga. After the break-up of Virga, Tyler decided to follow his other passion: musical theatre. However, after only one short semester at school, Tyler left.

Incredibly unhappy at school, and instantly recognizing the band’s undeniable potential, Tyler leapt at the chance to play rock and roll once again, and hasn’t looked back yet.

This current manifestation of Kevin and Ian’s aspirations is proving to be the most groundbreaking yet, as each member contributes their own unique style to the whole. As eclectic as each of the members’ influences may be, the band’s desire to create raw, heart-pounding melodic rock unifies them seamlessly, and their chemistry is undeniable.

The Urgency have now disbanded and are no longer together.

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
