Marthia Sides is not only one of the more dynamic performers to surface in Nashville, but she's also one of the more interesting. Marthia's from a musical theater and acting career in New York City. When not performing she trained as a stylist and now has numerous celebrity clients. Not many country fans know too much about New York. Tell us what is so special about the Big Apple.
"The greatest thing about NYC is that everything is right at your fingertips. No matter what you crave, day or night, you can find it in NYC and most likely within walking distance. I love food and there is nowhere in the world like NY for the diversity of foods and cultures."
Well you're here from New York. How do New Yorkers feel about country music?
"I think some really enjoy it, but most just don't know it and are never exposed to it. Unfortunately, NY is a rock, pop, and hip-hop town."
Tell us about a typical day in Marthia's life?
"Music, music, music, exercise, and I love to shop. I especially love vintage clothes - shoes, handbags, and of course, vintage cowboy boots!"
Which person in your life has touched you the most, musically?
"My vocal teacher in VA when I was a child really helped. She taught me to believe in myself and gave me a solid foundation. She also encouraged me to go to college and get a music degree."
How did you discover country music?
"I was always around country music as a child, but I listened to everything. A few years ago, I was on a CMT reality show and just fell in love all over again. Country is definitely my home!"
Which 5 artists should every fan own at least one CD by?
"Crystal Gayle, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis, and the Eagles."
What techniques are different between singing country and singing other styles?
"I came from an opera background, sang off-Broadway, and the biggest for me is singing with a microphone. It's so much easier not having to sing over a 50-piece orchestra and you can really stylize your vocals with a microphone and can be heard. When you are singing classical or Broadway, those emotions are hidden with the orchestra and they are much harder to convey."
How important do you think image is in making it big in country music?
"In this day and age, image is big in any type of music you sing. It's all about the camera and the media now. The better you look, or the blonder, it ups your chances for success."
Do you think you have found your voice as an artist yet or is that a work in progress?
"I have an extremely solid technique due to my classical background, but your style as an artist is always a work in progress."
If you could duet with anyone, who would it be?
"I would love to sing with Don Henley. He is amazing!"
