One of America’s most celebrated artists and earnest, Tom Petty, is probably best know for songs like "American Girl," " Refugee," and "I Won’t Back Down" and a classic stint with pals like Dylan and George Harrison as a Traveling Wilberry. More recently he’s been fighting the crass commercialism of the music business and on this new album take us back to the days when musicians not producers ruled the roost and the artist was a genuine musical creature. Every guitar played on this album, the liner notes tell us is a vintage. Thankfully, lead guitarist Mike Campbell is in the best form of his a life, and Mojo as good sampling of blues/folk/country rock as you’ll hear anywhere. US41 is a cracking rock song and the guitar literally burns through the high powered "First Flash of Freedom." Petty’s in good voice, aging well and looking set to be Dylan’s natural heir as rock and roll’s favorite curmudgeon.
