"Jammin' at Hippie Jack's" with Abigail Washburn at the State Museum

Posted on Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 2:45 PM

Abigail Washburn performs on Friday evening, November 19. A singing, songwriting Nashville clawhammer banjo player, Washburn is every bit as interested in the present and the future as she is in the past, and every bit as attuned to the global as she is to the local. She pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody has ever heard before. To put it another way, she changes what seems possible.

Live on the Buffalo Bill Stage at the State Museum, all performances are FREE to the general public. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-served. Click here to learn more about sponsorship opportunities and about up coming live performance tapings.

Join Us on Dec. 2 for "Electrified: The Guitar Revolution" film screening and Grammy winner Brad Davis's guitar workshop

The State Museum, in association with the Smithsonian Channel and Smithsonian Magazine, will be screening “Electrified: The Guitar Revolution” at 6:00 pm on Thursday evening, Dec. 2. This event is free and open to the public.

From the early days of the Model U and the Frying Pan to the guitar wars of Fender and Gibson, experience its evolution through vintage footage, interviews with rock historians and rousing live performances. Virtuosos like G.E. Smith of the Saturday Night Live Band go through the decades of sound innovations of the electric guitar.

After spending years on the road playing rock with Billy Bob Thornton, Modbilly with The Boxmasters, country with Marty Stuart, bluegrass with David Lee Roth and Earl Scruggs, newgrass with Sam Bush, & Gypsy jazz with John Jorgenson, Brad Davis steps out as "The Shredder" using his original amazingly fast speed picking technique - the "Double-Down-Up."

Join us for an electrifying evening. Seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
