New Album undun to be Released December 6th
The Roots Set to Perform Series of Dates at New York City’s Highline Ballroom on November 29th, 30th and December 5th
The Roots are set to debut a new App today as a companion piece to their new album undun (Island Def Jam), out December 6th. Through the use of photos, lyrics, a series of interviews and music video vignettes, the app provides an immersive experience that elucidates the life and times of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999), whom the album is based, a complex youth who struggles to definite himself within a troubled inner city milieu and dies in the process.
undun marks the first conceptually- based album from The Roots and quickly reaffirms the creativity of the outfit that are notorious for pushing the envelope. The album’s first single “Make My” featuring Big K.R.I.T. was released November 1st on iTunes which Billboard praised, “the musicality of the veteran group shines bright.” Through the use and emotives and Redford Steven’s internal dialogues, the album is an existential re-telling of his short life, seeking to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented—postmortem—and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.
