Trampled By Turtles Announce Spring Tour Dates, Including SXSW and Coachella

Posted on Tue, Feb 15, 2011 at 2:58 PM

Genre-busting acoustic 5-piece Trampled by Turtles are gearing up for a busy 2011 and are kicking off with a second video from their 2010 album Palomino, still holding at #2 on the Billboard bluegrass charts. The video for “Victory,” shot in Louisville, KY, finds the effortlessly talented pickers levitating through an abandoned building that’s in a state of starkly beautiful decay. The muted tones and playful use of stop-motion photography by director Justin Gustavison, who also filmed the video for TBT’s “Wait So Long” (now at 500,000 YouTube views) is a perfect fit for the cautiously hopeful lyrics and restrained tone of the song.

Trampled by Turtles have also announced tour dates throughout the summer, including their debut performances at Coachella and Telluride Bluegrass Festival and their triumphant return to Texas for appearances at both South By Southwest and the Old Settler’s Music Festival in Driftwood, TX. (See complete tour dates below.) While it’s the band’s quicksilver, high-energy playing that has made them a favorite on the tour and festival scene, where they sell out consistently, it’s TBT’s songwriting that’s the key. All the band members all cut their teeth in rock, punk and metal bands -- mandolinist Erik Berry can play Black Sabbath’s eponymous first album in its entirety – but also draw from the same well of inspiration as Townes Van Zant, Dylan, Neil Young, Del McCoury and Ralph Stanley, giving this classic genre their own unique spin.

While Trampled by Turtles are a bluegrass band in theory, they’re recognized, along with kindred acts such as the Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons and others, as true crossover artists, as likely to be found reviewed on an indie blog as on the pages of the Wall Street Journal. TBT’s “Banjo Dave” Caroll plays on Low’s new album, for example (the Duluth-based bands are longtime friends and have shared many a stage) and have a split single in the works with fellow Minnesotans Motion City Soundtrack, who will be covering TBT’s “Wait So Long.” TBT were also approached by Adult Swim’s Dave Willis (ATHF, Squidbillies) to record a music for Squidbillies; more info to come!

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
