Trampled By Turtles Announce Newport Folk Festival Appearance and Summer Dates

Posted on Mon, Mar 28, 2011 at 1:52 PM

If you missed Trampled by Turtles’ incendiary sets at SxSW 2011, which showed up in best-of lists and fest recaps by NPR, Esquire.com, American Songwriter and the Boston Globe, there will be several high-profile festivals this summer where you can catch the highly regarded Duluth, MN acoustic band. Along with making their debut at Coachella this year on Saturday, April 16 as well as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival on June 16, 2011, they’ve just announced their debut at the esteemed Newport Folk Festival for July 31, 2011.

It’s been a steady climb for the band since the April 2010 release of their breakthrough record, Palomino. The album is still holding in the Top 5 on the Billboard bluegrass charts, and critical acclaim has accompanied TBT’s word-of-mouth reputation as a live band not to be missed. While it’s the band’s energy and quicksilver picking that has made them a favorite on the tour and festival scene, it’s the songwriting that seals the deal. All the band members cut their teeth in rock, punk and metal bands but their original material draws from the same well of inspiration as Townes Van Zant, Dylan, Neil Young, Del McCoury and Ralph Stanley, putting their own unique spin on this classic genre.

Trampled by Turtles have been tapped to provide music for the Adult Swim cartoon Squidbillies, and will be releasing a split vinyl/digital single with fellow Minnesota band Motion City Soundtrack in June 2011. Stay tuned for further details.

Recent Praise for Trampled by Turtles:

“Trampled by Turtles is a bluegrass band from Minnesota. If you love The Avett Brothers or Mumford and Sons, give these folks a listen.” – NPR

“Many bluegrass bands love to show off their speed, but this outfit, from Duluth, Minnesota, invested its supercharged songs with a hooky playfulness and white-knuckle power. Fans of the Avett Brothers’ raucous side ought to take note, if they haven’t already.” – Esquire.com

Trampled by Turtles like to serve up their bluegrass at breakneck speed. The occasional folk ballad, written and sung by Dave Simonett, is a changeup that enriches their offering.” – Wall Street Journal

“Trampled by Turtles inhabit a fertile area somewhere between bluegrass and rock, often playing at warp speed on guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle but never forgetting that the song is the thing.” – The UTNE Reader

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
