Posted on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 3:13 PM

While gearing up for the release of his new studio album Stone Rollin’ (May 10th), Raphael Saadiq has announced new dates to his US tour (see routing below). The Stone Rollin’ tour, which kicked off this spring included performances at SXSW and most recently, the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, where Saadiq wowed crowds with his soulful throwbacks. In addition to the new dates, NPR Music is set to premiere the album on May 2nd while VH1 has added “Stone Rollin’” to its playlist. Raphael Saadiq will also promote the album on television the week of its release, performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, Later With Carson Daly, The Tavis Smiley Show, BET’s 106 & Park and VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live.” Raphael will also be featured in an upcoming episode of Live from Abbey Road. His album track “Good Man” also just reached the Top 20 at Urban Adult radio and was just featured in the hit VH1 reality drama, Mob Wives. Another album track, “Go to Hell” will be featured on an upcoming episode.

Although not set for release until May, Stone Rollin’ has already met with acclaim from critics across the board. Billboard magazine raves, “The multifaceted artist orchestrates a skillful balance between classic influences and contemporary nuances” while NPR Music praised the album as “a fine set of polished throwback soul…a big, bright ball of energy, and it serves Saadiq’s songs well.” Rolling Stone also recently named Saadiq as the “Best Retro Soul.” On this new album, Saadiq nods to his heroes like Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Little Walter and Sly Stone, while merging his own contemporary twist, one born out of a combination of his recent touring experiences, as well as inspiration derived from indie acts that hold regular rotation in his iPod. Opening with the stomping "Heart Attack," the album’s other standout cuts include the stunning "Go To Hell," featuring his studio squad of musicians who are melodically complimented by an angelic choir and the evocative Dixieland number "Day Dreams,” featuring Robert Randolph who plays steel guitar on the track.

May 19 Richmond, VA Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

Since Raphael Saadiq's early days with the groundbreaking 80's soul trio Tony! Toni! Tone! he has carried the torch for old school R&B and in the process has established his place as one of music’s most highly regarded recording artists and producers. In addition to releasing a series of critically acclaimed solo albums that have garnered multiple awards and nominations, Saadiq has also worked behind the scenes as an award winning producer, collaborator and sideman for some of music’s biggest acts including D'Angelo, John Legend, Joss Stone, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Stevie Wonder, the Bee Gees, The Isley Brothers, Mary J. Blige, TLC, Whitney Houston, Snoop Dogg, Earth, Wind and Fire and more. Now, at the peak of his creativity, Saadiq is finally ready to soak up the spotlight alone.

‘Music City 411- Robin Gibb Tribute

By: Andrew Vaughan

It’s truly heartbreaking to see the pain Robin Gibb’s family is going through right now. The Bee Gees singer is in a coma after suffering with liver cancer and most recently pneumonia. Of course, several big name pop acts have passed away recently- Davy Jones of The Monkees probably the most recent. Now I knew Davy to talk to but I’d never met his family. Which is why hearing about the Gibb family’s pain surrounding Robin is so difficult to handle.
