The Wood Brothers' will release their third album,
the atmospherically titled, Smoke Ring Halo, August 2 on Zac Brown's independent record company Southern Ground Artists.
The album is receiving overwhelming critical acclaim, with the New York Times raving, "Everything just falls into place. This band has been working at something and it shows." Paste Magazine lauds "Smoke Ring Halo only further cements the pair's reputation as masters of soulful folk," and All Music Guide declares, "[The Wood Brothers] create songs that call you back for additional listens." M Music & Musician Magazine praises, "The musicianship is fantastic, but the Woods get by on songs." The Lexington Herald-Leader affirms, "What you hear will be a welcoming set of unfussy songs that should serve these final days of summer well indeed."
The band kicks off it's 29 date tour or tonight, August 11th, at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY, with stops at the Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival (City Winery) in New York, NY on August 16th and the Philadelphia Folk Festival on August 21. More tour dates are below.
Brothers Oliver (guitar, vocals) and Chris Wood (bass, vocals, harmonica) deliver a wide-ranging album that is as musically and lyrically provocative as it is natural, nearly homespun. Jim Scott (Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams) produced and engineeered.
The rich, spacious sound on songs like the rousing opener "Mary Anna," the back-porch-funky "Shoofly Pie," the waltz-time plaint "Pay Attention," the elegiac title track, and the moving "Blue and Green" are the thoughtful culmination of Chris and Oliver's divergent musical pursuits. Scott captures it all on two-inch tape for a resonant, organically burnished sound.
Oliver honed his guitar chops and (eventually) songwriting voice first as a sideman with blues vet Tinsley Ellis, then with his own outfit, King Johnson. Chris formally studied bass at the New England Conservatory and is the irreplaceable bassist for the genre-defying trio Medeski Martin & Wood.
The Wood Brothes were featured recently in a NPR Weekend Edition story about Mason Jar Music - a collective of creative types filming and recording artists in vacant buildings. Check it out! Here
