Where do you draw the line between alpha and beta testing on API teams?

Something I keep running into on API-heavy projects: the handoff between internal testing and early external testing is fuzzier than most process docs make it sound. On paper the stages are clean. In practice we end up with builds that are technically still “internal” but already in front of a few friendly customers, and nobody agrees on what coverage each stage actually needs.

For teams shipping fast, this matters because the bugs you catch internally are cheap and the ones that slip to early users are expensive. But over-testing internally slows the whole thing down. There’s a real cost tradeoff and I don’t think we’ve tuned it well.

I found this breakdown of alpha testing vs beta testing useful for framing when each stage earns its keep and how to plan coverage without doubling the work. Curious how other people handle it though.

How do you define the cutoff on your team? Is it environment-based, audience-based, or just whenever someone decides the build feels ready? And do you change your API test strategy between the two stages, or run the same suite throughout?
